Enthymemes and Visual Arguments

Enthymemes -- Looking for Unstated Assumptions

The enthymeme comes from Aristotelian logic and is a syllogism (a group of premises) with a key premise missing. The missing premise is suppied by the audience. By discussing what is unstated in an image, students can be encouraged to posit ideas about cultural norms and authorial intention.

Visual Arguments

Ask students to construct visual arguments and post their images to Instagram. For something to count as a visual argument, J. Blair states "we have to be able to say what the claim is and what the reasons are, and we have to be able to say so clearly enough that the claims or reasons can be accepted or rejected." (25, "The Possibility and Actuality of Visual Arguments")
